Dimensions and Angles make perfect chairs!

These pages explain the dimensions of the chairs in the studio. After this i went on to look for measurements that are average for utility chairs. I will use these when i come to work out dimensions for my own chair

Eero Saarinen

After looking at the monster chairs and seeing that they are re designs i feel i should look at the original source and where they come from. The designer is Eero Saanrinen who was famous for his office chair designs.
This is the executive chair and fits into Saanrinens believes of simple, sweeping and arching structual curves. Its simple office chair that is comfortable and fits into most rooms if not all. But what happens when i change the colour to blue it gives the chair a whole new feel and look. The fabric is leather and the legs are stainless steel with a polished chrome finish. Changing the materials could give make it into a different expierence.

The tulip chair is a joint design by Saarinen and Eames. The chair is made of ABS plastic, cast aluminiun base and fabric cushion. The chair was designed to be a dinning chair but this can easily be office chair. I feel the redesigns of these chairs where made to give the chairs more personalityand a more unqiue look. The chairs are well designed but i feel this chair is a little neutral when it comes to character and that the monster chairs solve this problem. I would look into Eames but i feel this is straying to far from my cocnept of colour and human/animal characteristics.

Thomas Keeley's Bat Chair.. which led to this

While looking through books and websites i came across this chair. The chair is designed by Thomas Keeley who takes everyday objects and makes them into fuly functional art. The wings are made of rubber and the fangs white enamel. Looking at this i feel by adding small features i can make the chair easily feel like something new and give it a appealing quality to the user. Colours and animals are things we have favourites off and are part of our happiness. So how can i use colour and favourtism towards things to shape my chair in a sutle way.

When we choose what chair we will sit on colour comes into it. all the chairs are the same but i personally find i would rather sit in a chair of my favourite colour. By manipulating colour i can make a chair look cold even if its a warm material or make stone look warm., or just using a popular colour would make the chair more appealing to people. however i do like the idea of having the 3 primary colour as a set possibly .

retro vintage modern chair hacksI found these monster chairs which are redesigns of Eero Saarinens classic office chair designs. I cant find who the person who redesigned them or much more information but it shows off my main directions off well. through colour and shape you can give a chair a little life and make its easier for the user to have more of a connection and favourite.

I walk, i see chairs , we analysis them

Might as well actually look at chairs that i like

Chair project.... better look at whats already out there and how they are appealing. The brief ask for me to add value to a chair and to try design it so that the user can make a emotioal connection. I feel some of these chairs achieve this through different ways. I feel colour plays a big part as people will have favourite colours and choose a certain chair to sit on out of a set because its their favourite colour. other cases by adding features of a animal it can make the chair a lot more appealing to the user. While looking through different chairs i did notice that adding human features gave the chair a bit of character and may make people see it more as a person then a chair

CHAIRS, CHAIRS, CHAIRS, CHAIRS, CHAIRS,CHAIRS and some more chairs

New project , new rules and a different way to design the standard piece of furniture we all use and are familiar with. The brief asks for me to try add more value to a chair and make it so the user can have a more emotional connection with a chair. I look into:

-Measurements and angles of the standard utility chair and get a idea of size.
-Look at different types of chairs and designs and why i like them and how the designer can add value and a emtional connection.
-what type of features help make this emtional connection and how to exploit it through material and shapes and colour.
-RE DESIGN THE CHAIRRRRRRRRRRR
